Applying to UTS: UAC Info Session transcript

hi everyone welcome Thank you for uh spending your evening with us Uh
welcome to the applying to UTS UAC info session So to get things started
um introduction to who I am My name is Aribba I am a current final year
student at UTS I study engineering My focus is in mechatronics Uh that's
like robotics related um study as well as I study a bachelor of creative
intelligence innovation at this university Um joined with me is Lucas a
fellow student ambassador Um yes if you'd like to introduce yourself Hi
everyone Welcome to today's uh webinar My name is Lucas I'm a final year
student studying a bachelor of communication majoring in journalism and
social political sciences Yeah thank you Lucas So getting things started
as to why studying at UTS So we have three key things that we always let
students know So the first thing is about our location We are in the
heart of the city a 10-minute walk away from Central Station Uh we have
multitude of opportunities and these are linked with uh our surroundings
So we have a lot of industry like big companies like ABC station along
with uh smaller startup companies and a lot of opportunities are right
here at our doorstep that our students do to take a good advantage of
Another thing that we also like to u mention is that we um allow a lot
of global opportunities for students Uh we have things from the global
shorts program um to even student exchange where you can go overseas and
study at a different university for between like 3 weeks up to a year um
up to you entirely Um of course you need to finish your degree that you
have started at this university And the last thing that's really
important as well is about being industry ready So we have a lot of uh
work experiences internships and practical assessments integrated in our
courses and um these are for students to get ready for the real world
beyond just the theoretical but the practical hands-on um capability to
take on the workforce Your life really pretty much starts here at at
university and at UTS we offer a few other things on top of your
academic study Um some options include things like joining a student
club or a society Um as well as learning a language through our diploma
of languages program where there are six options for languages um that
you can pick from Uh you can also go on global exchange as I have just
mentioned um in over 40 countries and you can also harness your
leadership potential through the many programs at UTS um that offer
those opportunities for students We have 11 study areas uh from business
to education to engineering science maths and law Um you can pick your
degree or choice of study from any of these So key thing about applying
through UAC So applying through UAC um so first of all going to hop onto
that UAC website and in the top right corner at the red box you can see
the apply or login Um once you click on that you can go down to
undergrad ad application Um and then followed by the starting of your
application using that button right here if you're including your 12
students as well Um you go through the prompts So first of all you need
to give an email address Key thing please uh ensure your email is does
not end with like edu.au or gov.au So do not use your student email Use
your own personal email um set a password with it and record this so you
can sign in um afterwards Uh then you need to fill in things like
residential status So if you're a citizen or um permanent resident etc
Um choose what applies to you along with uh your student number and UAC
PIN So if you are a student in any of these categories you pick
accordingly Um and then you enter your student number and UAC PIN Uh for
your personal details is what what you follow through and that includes
things like your title full name etc Um and your unique student
identifier Um you can all you need to make sure you include that as well
the application And if you don't have one already you need to apply for
one Um you need to then provide family history details Again following
those those prompts and filling in especially the most important things
are the ones in the red asterisk which are required um followed by any
information about support services um including like how you're applying
through um any support services need through study and then finally your
application information So um you'll get an application number once you
have created it and this is important to keep on you keep a record of
this and this is important for you to then communicate with UAC
regarding um any sort of thing about your application including any
changes uh when you press continue you'll then add into the next stage
of qualifications So uh for all uh current uh recent school levers or
non-reent school levers you need to add a qualification according to you
uh we have there are different options there from secondary studies like
high school certificate or an IB um or if you have any uh certificates
or another bachelor's degree or masters that you've done um this is the
main just choose what uh fits any relevant ex uh qualifications that is
uh for you uh and then you get into your course preferences So you need
to search for your course preferences using this link here The key thing
is that you can add up to five of your preferences So choose wisely as
to what you would like to do the most Um for year 2025 year 12 students
currently Um make sure that when you add your course that you start you
choose the ones that start in um 2026 Um and if the course you study
isn't listed yet make sure you choose another course to complete your
application And you can always come back later and change your
preferences So to search through courses uh you'll get this uh page here
and you'll see that there's this dropown for select institutions Um this
kind of helps filter through what different degree options that there
are Uh so if you want to study UTS for example you would pick UTS here
And then of course you will have to search the course name the group
code or the campus Um and on this page with adding a course uh you can
see this is an example of uh a student's preferences their top five Um
so you'll see that there's the bachelor or the degree that they want to
study as well as the university and the campus Um and then in on the
side on the right you have your starting dates So the student would be
applying would have been from last year applying for the following year
Um so make sure that when you input it it is for the autumn of 2026 for
year 12 students uh applying for next year Um so February onwards uh
February 2026 onwards Uh you can always reorder your preferences So
don't worry if the first time you put it in and you realize that oh no I
want to change it up I want to change my options or reorder my
preferences You can always do that through UAC Uh it's pretty simple and
you can always redo it accordingly And finally at the end you can uh
declare you need to declare and um you know fill in this check box at
the bottom to make sure that you've read all the conditions and agree to
them And the last thing is with payments So in order to get your
application through um you need to actually pay the fee So this example
is showing $82 So if you apply before like the early but applications
end we'll go talk about that a bit later you'll need to pay $82 But if
uh you are applying setting up the account and applying after that date
then you'll need to pay $215 Uh just a reminder that you for your
application to be considered you still need to pay it Whether it be now
or if you want to pay for it later that is up to you And once you've
done that payment you'll see the screen um at the top in the green box
Thank you Your application has been submitted su successfully Um and on
this page you can manage your uh application at any time You can
download your confirmation of this and you can even apply for the
educational access scheme if that applies to you or any equity
scholarships according to your university Um UTS even offers some
ourselves Uh and yeah once you're all done you have your dashboard here
Uh pretty uh intuitive in terms of everything at the top is like all the
information about your personal details qualifications course
preferences etc You can always go back to this as soon as you um sorry
as long as you have your username or email uh and your password you can
log in and out um and change any of this information as need be So tips
with preferencing Uh the first tip is to actually put your favorite
course first Uh the way UAC works is they will go through your list and
they'll take it as a wish list The first option is what they think is
the one you really want the most So they will consider that as your
first preference That is the main big advice that we will that I will
give to you today The second tip is to the fact that you can accept as
many offers as you get Um however keep in mind you can only receive up
to one offer per round And the last tip is that it's not the end of the
world if for example you don't end up in that dream course that you
wanted Um there are a number of different pathways that you can take to
end up in that course of study So keep that in mind as well when you are
applying and putting your preferences in So there are a few three key
dates actually for the UAC applications So the first one is about early
bird applications which I mentioned just a little bit before Um that is
Tuesday the 30th of September 2025 Uh the key thing with this date is
that if you are to apply before this date you submit your application is
all confirmed the payment fee is $82 But if for example you are to
submit your application after that date it would be $215 um under UAC Uh
so that is the reason why we do mention that too Um the other two key
dates are your actual offer rounds So your first these are the two main
ones that a lot of the university offers come out at These are the
December round two and January round one uh December round two the
offers come out on 23rd of December on a Tuesday And for the January
round one those offers come out on Thursday the 8th of January in 2026
So another way of getting into the university uh beyond just UAC is
going through for UTS specifically is uh doing our early entry program
So there are two key ele eligibility criterias for this Uh the first is
to be a current domestic or international onshore year12 student and the
second is to be to have completed the year 12 New South Wales HSC or
equivalent of exams Um when you apply this is different to your UAC
application Uh you don't go to UAC at all You instead go to the UTS
online application portal uh these uh this scheme actually works where
you the offers are made based on your year 11 marks So nothing from year
12 at all is going to be considered in this application Uh if you for
example get the offer keep in mind that this is not an unconditional
offer There is a certain condition that you need to meet and that would
be a certain minimum ATR requirement but it is much lower than what your
degree would have originally had if for example you had applied through
UAC Uh keep in mind as well through this early entry program at UTS um
you'll be able to preference three UTS courses and there's only one
offer around and you can receive only one offer So please put your most
desired course first Um the applications for this open on Wednesday the
4th of June uh this year Uh so get in and you can apply for UTS this way
as well So there are a few other admission schemes that we do One that
is uh merit based so based on um academic results or aptitudes We offer
three different schemes Uh one is the year 12 subject scheme which
applies for most of the different degrees that we offer Uh this is where
a student can receive a maximum of five adjustment points uh based on
HSSE marks for relevant courses Uh it's not available for law students
uh unfortunately And um these adjustment points are on those subjects It
depends on each degree that you're doing Um and there's nothing that you
need to do for it It's automatically added onto your ATR Uh the other
option is if you're planning to do a UTS business degree you can always
go for the cadet ship scheme So that is awarded for currently attending
a one-year paid cadet ship before starting your degree And you can apply
for this via UAC Uh and the third option that we also have is for
students who would like to study science at UTS Um where a student may
feel that their HSC results might not reflect their scientific potential
Um there is this a aptitude test and that basically assesses your
analytical and critical thinking skills There is no theory uh needed to
study for it like a regular uh science exam but it's more about
assessing your the way you think and work um your analytical and
critical thinking skills As mentioned there are also admission schemes
based on equity So there are four of these that are on the screen The
first is your elite athlete and performance scheme So this is for
students uh if say you are wanting to continue to train say you've
already competed or um performed at a state competition national or even
Olympian level Um you can receive up to five adjustment points to your
selection rank Um this scheme supports those students who have um
achieved uh excellence in their um in their field of sport um and
supports them through university uh through the different facilities and
options that we have here Uh there's another program with uh women in
STEM So if you are a student who identifies themselves as female and you
are interested in studying engineering IT and or a construction project
management course um you are awarded 10 adjustment points and these are
automatically adjusted Uh there's also the educational access scheme
inputs and this is for students who may have experienced dis
disadvantage during their year 11 and or year 12 years Um for these
applicants successful year 12 applicants must reach a minimum age of 69
And the last stream our equity stream is uh the school's recommendation
scheme It supports students who have the potential to succeed at
university but they may not have based received an offer based on their
ATR alone Uh successful applicants must need a minimum ATR of 60 and for
students wanting to do law it would be 71 Um students would need to be
eligible for the educational access scheme in order to apply for the SRS
So these are admissions pathways that you can take at universities So
you can enroll with a course with a lower selection rank and reapply to
UTS after a year This is like for a case where these schemes are if for
example you don't end up in the dream course at UTS Um so that was one
way The second way is uh you can complete a UTS college diploma So this
is for students say they missed out on a undergrad degree and they want
to uh actually study that at this university We offer uh students to
complete a diploma at our UTS college with the minimum requirements And
what that does it it fasttracks you into the second year of the UTS
degree As long as you have passed those minimum requirements you are
automatically put through into the bachelor's or whatever degree that
you want to study Uh another way is that you can reapply after one year
from another uni or complete studies at TA or private college And the
last way is the Jimna admissions program So if you s successfully
complete this program you can progress straight into undergraduate study
This one in particular is for uh students who are indigenous and or
touristra islander descent We also offer a lot of scholarships and they
range from a lot of things They're co-op uh equity based for women
indigenous Australians athletes high achievers and humanitarian and
asylum seekers Um there are so many scholarships on offer for all all
the facult faculties at this university So the best way to figure out
what scholarship suits you um would be to use the QR code on the screen
here uh to check out which scholarship you're eligible for There are a
lot of different filters that you can pick Um say for example for me uh
if I wanted to do a scholarship at UTS when I applied I would look for
um something under the faculty of engineering for example as an
engineering want student um and as a female as well And there are lots
of different options that you can see that apply to you The key thing as
well with scholarships is to look at when the open and close dates are
because they are they are different and spread out across the year And
lastly our upcoming events So we have four key events on the screen here
So the first one is for our non-school levers So anyone who uh has
finished year 12 not not this year but the year before uh and prior to
that you that is on the Wednesday 14th of May this year We also have our
applying to UTS early entry program info session on Wednesday the 11th
of June this year Open day on Saturday the 30th of August 2025 And
lastly info day Thursday the 18th of December Um all these four dates uh
keep a note of this uh in your diaries Uh they have not been they're not
live at the moment but they will be soon So keep an eye out on the UTS
events page uh and they will be there for you to register to And now
we're going to segue into our FAQs and I'm going to invite Lucas back on
the screen uh to help me out with this So here we go Lucas what is the
difference between an early entry application and a UAC application so
um with the early entry application you directly apply to UTS Um and
with that we look into your year 11 overall and final grades and give
you a provisional offer before you say HSC Um and with that we just need
your NES number and it's free of charge And also you can put down three
preferences And of course very similar to UAC you can also put your most
desired course at the very top Meanwhile with the UAC application it is
a um a direct entry with UAC Uh it's outside of UTS u websites and you
can then put down five different preferences and uh yeah you will be
able to receive the offer after HSC And what is a selection rank and how
is it different to an ATAR so your ATAR is a rank that is formed but
from your year 12 year year 12 results So from your internal assessments
at school along with your final exams the external ones um you get a
rank based on this and your selection rank is actually your ATR plus any
adjustment factors Um as mentioned at UTS there are a lot of different
adjustment factors um uh that we offer uh for students to help get into
their course of their dreams Um and the selection rank is what we use to
help um make sure that it's something that we use to get students to get
into the course that they would like Uh so that is the main difference
between those two Lucas can you edit your preferences after submitting
the answer is yes After submitting your preferences um you can actually
edit at any time and if you receive an offer and you want to change your
preferences to see whether you can get a different offer you can still
edit that Oh that you asked me Yeah So how do you decide on the order of
preferences in your application so you decide the order of your
preferences based on what you would like to study the most As mentioned
earlier um the way UAC works is to is a preferential preferential sorry
um way of choice So you need to choose whatever you put as first UAC
will consider as first So I would the main advice I would give is
whatever you want to study the most make sure that's the first
preference The same would apply for say the UTS early entry program as
mentioned before Um that is the main you choose your order based on what
you would like to study the most what you find the most interesting and
passionate to you And uh Lucas what advice do you have for new students
starting at UTS well um uni is not just only about exam and assignments
and going to class It's think about beyond that We want you to also
think about going into exchange and live in a different country and
actually experience something new and exciting Um so we have globe
exchange that you can actually apply So you can go overseas for six week
or six months or even longer to one year Um and if you want to learn the
language and culture I will also recommend you to do the bachelor of
international studies So you can also go uh overseas to Spain and study
over there as well Perfect Um in addition to that I'll also say um as a
student as well um another piece of advice I'd give is to get involved
in the campus life So there are amazing opportunities as Lucas said um
that we do have for students abroad um through our degree and other
external programs that we offer but we also have lots of different
opportunities at UTS One recommendation is to go to the UTS O day or
orientation day you get to meet like all the different programs that we
have on offer including student societies Uh for me personally I started
out uh my first couple of years being a bit shy not knowing where to go
making friends things like that And after joining some friends going to
different events um getting involved in student societies um I'm now
part of like an executive team for one of those student societies And I
have seen myself grown and change over the years in many positive ways
And I don't think I would have done that if it wasn't for me taking that
jump and leap um and getting involved in different activities that UTS
has to offer

Applying to UTS: Early Entry Program Info Session

Applying to UTS: Early Entry Program Info Session

Covers how the Early Entry Program works, how to apply, how applications are assessed, and what happens after you get an offer.

Applying to UTS: Early Entry Program Info Session transcript

All right everybody welcome to the early entry program welcome to the
UTS early entry program information session this is going to be your
goto most valid piece of information when it comes to all things early
entry and as you can see there is a quick poll that's come up because we
want to know have you already applied to UTS early entry or not so chuck
in your answer in that poll and also chuck in the chat if you've got
access whereabouts in Sydney where what's high school around what area
you guys are tuning in from i'd love to know because we've got a few
state specific information here and just out of my curiosity I'd love to
know because we've got quite a big group so without further ado let's
begin before we begin I'd like to acknowledge the country and the fact
that UTS acknowledges the Gatagle people the Burubarangle people of the
Dar nation the Bigle people and the Gamele people upon whose ancestral
lands our university stands we would also like to pay respect to the
elders both past and present acknowledging them as the traditional
custodians for these lands all right so this is the agenda for tonight
5:00 p.m i know we're 5 minutes overboard we have some welcome and
housekeeping which I've already done mostly the housekeeping you can see
in the chat my colleague James and Priya they'll be sending in key
information around you know keeping your microphones on mute your
cameras off until we reach the live Q&A portion where you'll be able to
ask myself and Florence we will do a bit of an introduction soon and
we're going to go straight into the session we're going to go straight
into understanding everything about early entry admission pathways and
then a quick panel cuz Florence and I are both students and we've got a
lot to share so let's get started my name is Mahir i am a second year
journalism and law student and Florence would you like to introduce
yourself of course hi everyone my name is Florence i'm a fourth year
student and I'm studying business and IT amazing let's get straight to
it all right so why UTS the first question that comes to mind now UTS is
one of the most if not the most accessible university in the heart of
the city we're located in the depths of Ultimo and Hay Market with
Broadway Shopping Center right opposite industry all over and it's only
a 5-minute walk from Central Station so no matter where you're tuning in
from in the state if you can just get to Central it's one of the most
easily accessible and following on from that we offer global exchange to
over 40 countries and that's regardless of whatever degree you're doing
whatever degree you're doing you've got access to go on exchange to
other countries and actually study and gain academic credit points as
part of your degree and the final thing is something that we very very
pride on as a constantly innovative university we've got technology in
our name right and the point being is that we are surrounded by industry
for example I study journalism and we've got ABC News the headquarters
building right opposite our gym i know I'm working out with the view
tonight so it's it's very very cool and with that let's move on to
actual life around uni so yes we've got the academic side of things yes
we've got the career side of things but we've got over 180 clubs and
societies ranging from sports from hockey to the Taylor Swift
appreciation societies to a Pokémon club society to faculty specific
societies we've got the biggest law society across universities that's a
fun fact and you can also learn a language so you can travel abroad as
part of a degree we offer called international studies and like I said
go on global exchange and take up leadership positions when you're when
you're overseas and with that for some reason my PowerPoint has frozen
no it hasn't okay here we go our study areas these are the big questions
so our disciplines range from everything from IT to business to law to
science and math where students have gone to the Great Barrier Reef to
conduct scientific experiments to communications right hugh Jackman
studied communication fun fact at UTS so we've got the whole range and
we've got a very indepth breakdown about all the subjects we do in our
course and the main thing is that almost all of them they're offered
with an early entry and which is exactly what we're going to go into
right now so our early entry program is very very unique and very
accessible to all students across the country right so you have to be a
domestic or international onshore student you have to have completed the
equivalent of the high school certificate if you're from another state
or the HSSE itself and the big confusing part is that the application
for UTS early entry is not through UWAC it's through UTS so it's through
an online application portal which is from UTS separately and it's
completely free right so all the more incentive for you guys to apply
early entry officially opened last week on the 4th of June and it closes
in September on the 8th of September the best part though is that the
office are given the offers like you'll be notified if you're successful
almost a month before your HSC exam and I think Florence can talk about
this later on in our panel how stress relieved you are walking into that
HSSE exam room with a offer in your back pocket right it creates this
level of relief that you don't get from anything else and you'll be able
to preference three UTS courses there's one offer but you get three
preferences and it'll be all dependent on your year 11 academic
performance there's been a lot of questions a lot of discourse around oh
does does extracurricular count toward my merit no it's just your
academic performance another major thing about early entry I just forgot
to mention is that it's conditional so we'll talk about the ATAR drops
and the AT requirements for each course but your offer is being held on
to until after the HSSE so you still need to put all your chips into the
HSSE it's just a reduced ATR requirement conditional for you to fully
gain access and enroll into the degree like I said it's completely free
absolutely no harm to apply the worst is you don't get in it's the same
if you don't and at the start of your application you need a PIN you
need a fourdigit PIN and it's the first four digits of your date of
birth so if you're born on the third I'm going to get this right the
10th month is October yes it is the 3rd of October 2007 your PIN will be
0310 not too hard just the first two digits of the day and the next two
digits of the month and the specific number you use will depend on
whether you're a HSC IB or interstate student right so all of the
details around the actual logistics the mechanics of operating and
applying it's all on the website so you just look up UTS UTS early entry
program first link takes you straight there and if you're confused
generally just look up ask UTS and you can give the phone number a ring
and they'll verbally talk you through the process all right this is the
part you've all been waiting for yes what are the actual ATR
requirements so for law courses where the average where the where the
required ATR is 97.3 it gets dropped down to 80 right for sports and
exercise courses some of them are required 85 plus 90 plus it gets
dropped down to 75 and 69 ATA for all other courses like engineering IT
science and math which aren't listed now you've noticed I've skipped the
psychology part because there's something special about psychology
there's a bit of a limited availability however the reason for that is
because it's a very fresh degree we're just entering our second cohort
and we offer an honors version psychology straight and as part of
criminology as well which works very well handinhand if you want to
study the minds of criminals and also you know maybe practice psychology
on the side this is the degree for you and it significantly drops it to
a 7 to3 requirement so get in there early because on the screen you can
see that psychology is limited but it's still available alongside design
and architecture and building courses so anything from fashion design to
interior design product design interior architecture it's limited but
it's available so all the more reasons so even tonight you can just
enter in your PIN list the three courses and press submit now the
courses that are explicitly excluded are mainly our co-op options so our
accounting co-op IDA co-op computing science cyber security co-op IT
co-op right those are excluded because they need a reflection of your AT
they need an understanding of your year 11 year 12 performance my bad
because they're slightly more competitive and they are more they have an
additional layer of applying so you need to sit an interview and you
have to answer questions right so that's that's why they're not included
they're not excluded it's not because we don't want to give you the the
the course we do want to give out early entry courses but the reason
they're excluded is for that reason and the three degrees on their own
which are included excluded are midwiffery midwifrey and Bachelor of
Creative Intelligence and Innovation BCII for short and the Bachelor of
Sport and Exercise Science only the exercise Therapy major so that's
very important to note only the major there's a non- major specific
degree that's part of it but the major is excluded and this is all
because of the slightly more advanced a few skills that you need to
develop sitting your year 12 and based off your year 12 results which is
what we need to see but aside from that almost all of the courses are
included in early entry all right the key dates like I said it's open
it's been open since last week it closes on the 8th of September and
it's released the the provisional offers are released to you guys on the
24th and the HSSE exams which you guys should know the back of your palm
the dates better than I should on the 16th of October so you've got a
month to sit back relax understand you've got an offer with one of the
best unis in the world fun fact our nursing degree was actually recently
ranked the fourth best in the world and then the 18th December is when
you'll either be successful based contingent upon your AT like we've got
the minimum requirements the conditional requirements or you'll have to
maybe pursue a separate admission pathway which we talk about however
the major part I want you to get out of this is that it closes on the
8th so you still got a lot of time to put forward some research talk to
some family and friends and people who may have already applied for
early entry but the the key dates are on the screen all right what are
some other schemes and pathways what if god forbid you you you needs a
few extra points and you don't necessarily get the the ATR you need
we've got your back because we've got a year 12 subject scheme so you
can you can receive a maximum of five adjustment points based on your
HSC marks for relevant subjects if you just look up on your browser year
12 adjustment factors and you just select the degree that you're
interested in and you look at the table there is a list of subjects and
in another column there's a list of bands that you can achieve and the
maximum adjustment points you get on top of your ATR to better your
chances into getting a degree right now that applies both if you apply
to UAC or early entry now another thing is the business cadetship scheme
this is exceptional for students of business i've only heard good things
about it it's pretty much where if you're successful you commence your
business degree all and fine but the year before you get one paid
opportunity to be a cadet for a big accounting firm you maybe got dreams
of being a I don't know like a cadet at PWC KPMG i'm not familiar with
my accounting firms this is purely based off some knowledge from my
friends but no the the business cadetship scheme is great because you
gain real world experience the equivalent of what a fourth year or a
third year student might gain before you even commence your degree so
you're already set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd and this
furthers with the science aptitude assessment because this is very
unique to UTS it's students who want to pursue science maybe you are
very interested in the study of a very specific area of science physics
you want to be a physicist and you think that your HSC results don't
directly reflect your potential so what we do offer is an aptitude
assessment where you don't have to study at all it purely assesses your
on the spot critical and analytical thinking skills which may have not
been fairly judged in the HSSE and maybe that's something you feel maybe
you feel like I think I've got a bit more in me and I want another
chance this is your second chance so any science interested students you
can apply for this whether you think you did well or not in the HSSE
it's another opportunity to show the uni that yes you you really are are
somebody who has what it takes to study science another great equity
based admission is elite athlete and performance scheme so our EAP for
short if you have competed sport or performed a creative arts so if
you're a stand-up comedian if you're an actor and you've done it at a
state or national level for performers it's at a national or
international level you get an additional five adjustment points to the
selection ranking so that furthers your your likelihood to get admitted
and same with women in STEM you get 10 additional adjustment forms and
those are automatically adjusted so no need to worry for you there if
you're interested in engineering and IT or construction project
management you get 10 additional points inputs as well and are pretty
cool i first saw that wording and said input UTS and looked like an bit
of an idiot it's just inputs students who have experienced disadvantage
so if you experienced disadvantage and the actual criteria for that
disadvantage is all on the website during year 11 or year 12 so
throughout senior school you must just reach a minimum ATR of 69 and you
get further adjustment factors srs student recommendation scheme for
short is another great equity scheme and another great admission pathway
where all you need to do is apply and your careers advisor usually deals
with the rest in the back end and you need a minimum ATR of 60 for that
very important to note for law it's slightly different it's 71 but this
is for May if you may not receive an offer based on your ATAR alone this
helps in bringing up your ATAR because again selection rank is ATAR plus
any adjustment factors moving on our admission pathways okay God forbid
you don't get early entry oh no you don't get UAC but you tried which is
the main part because it's there's nothing to lose in applying we still
have an option to come into UTS for you and the main option is through
starting a diploma with UTS college so you can fast track into your
second year of study in your chosen UTS degree by completing a diploma
that has different requirements or you could also enroll in a similar
course let's say you're studying engineering and you want to really go
into mechanical engineering but instead you enroll into mechatronics
engineering because it's got a slightly lower selection rank right so
you can continue studying the core subjects that engineering has to
offer and then as soon as you get your grade point average if you meet
the requirements and you get competitive marks then your application
will be considered to switch majors or switch degrees switch courses
right another thing you can do is you can reapply so you can study
different degree you can even complete a year at another university and
if course credits can be carried over right so you can get recognition
for prior learning and if you're a First Nations student if you're an
indigenous student we've got an amazing institution at UTS called
Jambana Institute where we support First Nations students through
scholarships through academic support career support all throughout your
degree it's amazing we've got an entire research team behind it and if
you want more information on that then just look up Jambana Institute
UTS and all the information is online all right what happens if you
don't get the ATAR or early entry to UTS like I was sharing before the
major way which most students do is that they apply through UTS college
so you still start and finish UTS at the same time as your friends you
still get the same access to clubs and societies right same student life
social life all of it stays the same it's just that you start off with a
diploma rather than an undergraduate degree and you've got two options
for a diploma you can start eight months or you can do 12 months but a
bit more on UTS college you start with a diploma like I said same first
year subjects as a UTS degree and it's a very supportive environment so
it's very uni style you almost don't even feel like you're you're you're
pretty much a part of the uni except the only difference is that you've
enrolled through UTS college and you once you successfully complete your
diploma you can move straight into your second year at UTS as you can
see on the screen there's a bit of a disclaimer so it's based upon your
grade point average and depends upon the specific diploma you choose now
if you've got specific particular questions around the nature of certain
diplomas just look up the diploma online and our website has all the
answers for you why UTS college though a bit more into UTS college you
get two qualifications so you have tailored support through UTS college
you can fast track into your second year at UTS if you do an eight-month
diploma even if you do a 12-month diploma you can still get into your
second year and it's a very fun way just to get started at UTS right a
diploma is slightly less competitive it's slightly less heavy in terms
of the workload how it works so in high school this is your the
statistics so the minimum HSSE subject average right so for an 8-month
diploma it's 75% for 12 months it's 67% and that's the two options I was
talking about now if you have a read at the bottom it's depending on
your chosen major depending on if you get access to second year uni or
not right now and once you're done that you can start your second year
of degree and just literally carry on just like every other student so
it's meant to transition you into a bachelor's degree just like every
other student scholarships we offer such a wide range of scholarships
it's it's amazing we've got all of this money sitting over waiting to
give to you students right so we've got co-op scholarships like I talked
about we had somebody one year they were the only person that applied
for a co-op scholarship and we've got co-op scholarships that give up to
$51,000 throughout your time and study yes it's almost like a salary and
they were the only person in the state that applied so they got it right
so it doesn't matter how advanced you think you are in terms of merit or
how how what your chances you think you are you've got no idea of the
number of students who are applying so we always advise students to
regardless of what preconceptions they may have of their performance or
extracurriculars apply because the next thing you know I only got
slightly above average for my year 11 marks in early entry and I was
successful the same thing applies to co-ops so we've also got co-ops on
equity based for women as well so women in IT women in engineering up to
$5,000 there indigenous Australians more information that's the same
thing I was talking about earlier around Jambana Institute for elite
athletes so state or national level you get scholarships you also get
access to an exclusive gym i know just for you guys so you can flex to
all your friends and it's actually pretty cool it's got a glass top so
everybody looks at you working out and they can't join that gym because
it's just for just for high performing athletes and for high achievers
as well got a vice chancellor scholarship so the details about how high
achieving you need to be is on our website around scholarships just look
up UTS scholarships and all the information is over there and
humanitarian and asylum seeker scholarships as well similar thing the
specific criteria will be best if you have a look go down the rabbit
holes have a look at the website and you have all your questions
answered there now this is the best part of the night guys i know you've
been holding on to a lot of questions i'm seeing a lot of questions
coming through the Q&A my team is seeing a lot of questions coming
through the chat and this is where you get all of your skepticism any
doubts you may have speak now this is the best time this is the only
time it's the last session we're running around early entry and Florence
is about to answer a few questions before we go into the live Q&A so
Florence the first question I have for you is how did you decide decide
why did I pronounce that with a Z in it how did you decide on the order
of preferences in your early entry application let's hear it so what I
did was when I was in your 12 I actually opened up the workbook and all
the course guides that I got from the different universities i sat down
with my dad and we actually had a look and had a conversation with him
and my careers advisor and like his friends as well and like my aunties
my uncles just to get a gauge of like what career path I wanted to go to
and I think that would be my advice to you guys as well if you're not
sure what you guys want to actually do just talk to as many people as
you can that way you can you can see what jobs are out there even jobs
that you think that aren't out there like they will be out there and you
can find these kinds of jobs so that's what I did and that's what I also
recommend for you guys to do so my first preference was what I wanted to
do the most so for you guys who are applying to early entry make sure
that you put what you want what degree you want to do the most as your
first top choice i don't think you could have put it better and just a
quick quick interruption that's that's amazing Florence and I think a
lot of students will benefit from that piece of advice family is one of
the most underrated sources because they've got a completely different
view to your friends florence one more for you how did receiving an
early entry offer ease the pressure of your final exams let's hear it oh
my gosh like I think the amount that the pressure is off me is literally
indescribable like because in when I was in year 12 during my internals
so any assignments that I did I actually thought I didn't do very well
so the HSC for me was a make it or break it and then on top of that I
was also a co student so the uncertainty of what was going on out there
like I didn't even know when I was going to do the HSC we didn't know
how it was going to run so getting I just remember the confetti I got
from opening this email it just felt like all the pressure just just
disappeared like off my shoulders and then I could actually enjoy
learning the subjects that I wanted to do i could enjoy um learning
about my modern history instead of thinking that like I have to learn
this just because I have to do well and when you enjoy actually studying
the subjects you end up getting a better mark anyway right so yeah it's
just it all works in your favor that's that's amazing i can't believe it
i didn't know you studied during co So I do have one more for you
because you're just so good at answering these questions a bit a bit a
bit a bit of a a bit of a sidetrack around early entry a bit more of the
social life i've got quite a few students i think they'd love to hear
this what clubs and societies are actually available at UTS absolutely
oh there's so many like I think there's over 180 clubs and societies at
UTS every year there's more you guys when you guys join UTS you guys can
start your own society as well there's a matcha society there's a
society for every single faculty there's a society for every ethnicity
there's majam society there is drawing society there's puzzle society
there's literally any society that you think you can think of it's
literally here at UTS yeah I know the matcha society it's my my friend
runs it so any of you students when I see you guys next year at UTS just
let me know and we'll get you straight in cuz they go to some pretty
good marcher places i can tell you that florence you're on fire today so
I've got one more for you are you ready i'm ready the question is what
support services are available for students so I'm talking maybe yes
they're great they got successful in early entry so excited but they're
feeling slightly overwhelmed what what support services are available
there are heaps and heaps of support services at UTS i know they there's
counseling here if you need um to see a psychologist um you can go see
one with a student who is doing like a placement and it is cheaper as
well i am also a notetaker at uni so I work for the accessibility team
so anybody who has any issues um with their exams or they have a medical
condition or they have an accessibility condition you can just let
assess the accessibility team know and they can send you a noteaker you
can get um exam provisions as well so if you need extra time um there
will be someone oh you'll be given extra time and if you need someone to
be with you during your exam you will have someone there with you as
well does it count now if I just request for you to be my noteaker or
contact the best what's that you might have to contact the accessibility
team contact the accessibility we'll do that for sure and I know that
counseling services are free that is yes counseling services are free
like that is that is as good as it gets florence last question for you
what are the biggest challenges you faced when transitioning from high
school to uni that's a really good question going from uni um high
school to uni is actually it's not the easiest thing it's a really
really big change and for me it was knowing that I wouldn't have my
friends with me um having to put myself out there in an environment
where I'm unfamiliar from going from a hundred students in my year to
like how many did you say like 44,000 before so like it's actually
insane but putting myself out there I think was the most difficult thing
that I had to do but I've learned so much like I've learned really good
communication skills i've learned um I can tell thank you but yeah so
even though it was the hardest it was really really rewarding and I've
made a bunch of friends from that what about you Mah my biggest
challenge I'll show you okay i think to keep it short and sweet and
simple my biggest challenge was well I came from a high school where
there were only 130 odd students in the grade right so very very small
pond and first day of uni it was like this pond of 44,000 students it
was insane and I was like well where are my people where am I going to
find that the very friends that I dreamed of that I was going to find
that you know tight-knit group of friends that you would see in the
movies that uni students have i was just like I want to find people that
I gel with very fast and I struggled to but what happened was the
greatest thing about UTS is that we've got so many pathways and avenues
for social life because as a law student it's it's quite difficult and
and I think there was some stat about like it's the second most dropped
out of degree or something so the only way to to tackle one of the only
ways to tackle the the stress and the burden that comes with a law
degree and a double degree in general like you must know as well as a
fourth year student is through having a good bunch of friends so it
wasn't just the clubs and societies it was the clubs and societies it
was the sports teams it was the common areas you know just striking up a
conversation i think UTS is built in such a way where it's compact yeah
sure it's dense but that also means that you're always around your
friends and you see the same people again and it almost becomes like a
familiar environment so the challenge was really something that brought
me closer to UTS and I'm so grateful that I happened to have a challenge
with initially finding friends and then now now having the like calling
them up whenever whenever I want and I know they'll pick up and then we
see each other at uni have a great time so I think any challenge you
face at UTS is designed in such a way naturally that it will get
resolved and if it doesn't like Florence said you've got so many support
services on offer and you also have academics who can be very good
friends so I think the biggest challenge was really something that
turned out very very well for me and turned out in a way where I just
was further inclined to stay at UTS for as long as I could so there you
go bit of a longwinded answer but that's the biggest challenge I faced
all right let's move on to some frequently asked questions this is going
to get very technical so for those participants 300 people still in the
call stay all the way because this is this is the this is the
nitty-gritty of early entry a lot of your Q&As's might be answered here
right so Florence how are the early entry programs applications actually
assessed so they're only assessed by your year 11 um academic results so
doesn't include any extracurriculars that you might have um be doing
before or after or during so it's just your year 11 results um that's it
all right very good clarification there i used to think it was
extracurriculars no it's not it's purely based on academic merit and
Florence when assessing year 11 results will certain subjects be given
extra waiting or not no so none of the subjects just because you choose
engineering and you might do an engineering subject right now in high
school you will not get any extra waiting it's just based on like how
you've performed overall in year 11 so for those who are might be
worried about oh I didn't take this class and I want to do this degree
it has no relation to that so it's just overall how you've done in year
11 got it so no subjects are given extra rating yep cool i think I want
to ask you this one as well as a student if I saw that slide this is the
first question that would come to mind why are some courses excluded
from the early entry program yeah so for courses like the co-op or the
cadet ship um we look at all the applicants at overall so there is no
set minimum ATR so that's why we can't really give an early entry for
that um also for those courses as well you have to conduct like an
application so you have to answer short and long questions also you have
to do an interview so it's a bit hard just to assess on one um specific
ATR for other courses such as midwifery or the sport exercise science
courses they're also based on your year 12 um learning outcomes so
that's why you're also not giving any early entry offers for those
courses as well got it that's why so it's not really because we don't
want to give them the degree it's because purely we just want to see a
bit more from you and I think it turns out well in that way because you
much rather be prepared for a more competitive scholarship and a more a
more a more tedious degree which turns out very well in the long run
than walk in very underprepared getting it through early entry and not
realizing that you needed a few more marks and an interview behind it
that's amazing Florence i think that's that's very well answered and if
you don't mind answering this final one for me what is the difference
between an early entry application and a UAC application what's the
difference sure so it actually might get really confusing because
there's like a lot of applications for everyone um right now so for the
early entry at UTS this is solely based on the UTS website and UTS
portal so this is given out by UTS and solely only for UTS courses um
with the UTS early entry application it is a provisional offer as well
so you still have to meet the minimum requirements while for the overall
application you provide or new work that is for multiple different
universities or all the universities in New South Wales um as well so
yeah that's basically the difference cool and last question what is a
selection rank and how is it different to an ATAR so a selection rank is
essentially your ATAR and any bonus points so for example I study IT and
I was eligible for the women in STEM um bonus points so for example if I
got an ATR of 70 and I get 10 extra bonus points my selection rank is
now 80 does that make sense got it yes yes so selection rank is higher
than an ATAR essentially because you include the bonus point yes makes a lot of sense and if you want to know what exactly bonus points you get
for certain subjects and certain degrees just look up year 12 adjustment
factor scheme yeah and it should be the first thing that pops
